About Avelox
Avelox is also known as Moxifloxacin, Avelon and Vigamox. It is a chemotherapeutic agent and is also used as an ophthalmic solution to cure conjunctivitis. It is however a drug whose use is much restricted and allowed only in some special diseases when all other antibiotics that could be used to cure those diseases fail.
What it is used to cure
- Avelox is used in acute chronic bronchitis, but its use is restricted in this regard.
- In acute bacterial sinusitis Avelox might prove to be effective but again its use is restricted.
- Avelox might prove effective to cure community acquired pneumonia
- In skin and skin structure infections are curable by the use of Avelox
- Avelox acts in an effective manner in cure of intra abdominal infections
- It is not quite as effective in urinary tract infections because it is metabolised and eliminated through the hepatic route.
- Avelox is used to treat susceptible bacteria caused conjuntival infections and is thus licensed for use in ophthalmology.
What it looks like
- Avelox is available as a tablet- to be consumed orally in 400 mg versions.
- It is available as eye drops to be used for conjunctivitis.
- The solution version of Avelox contains 400 mg of Avelox and 0.8% saline
Precautions that must be taken
- There is a possibility of Central Nervous System stimulation and convulsions if Avelox is taken with Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Avelox has bacterial resistance and hence it is not advisable for the cure of sexually transmitted diseases.
- Patients with epilepsy and seizures are advised against using Avelox.
- In patients with cardiovascular diseases, Avelox is not advised.
- Avelox is also associated with liver damage, hence people with existing liver problems are indicated not to use the medication
- The blood placenta and blood milk barrier are crossed easily by Avelox and hence it may cause harm to the foetus in case of pregnant women. Birth defects and spontaneous abortions may be caused by the use of Avelox. Also nursing women are advised against the drug as it is passed onto the child.
- In children there are fatal risks in the consumption of Avelox. Hence it is not administered in general. There may be permanent injury to the musculoskeletal system if the drug is given to children.
What are its side effects?
- Tendon ruptures and tendonitis may be caused by use of Avelox therapy.
- Liver failures and other liver injuries have been reported by patients.
- Hepatitis, colitis, psychotic reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome is some of the varied side effects that Avelox can produce.
- Some patients even complain of serious visual complications during the use of Avelox therapy.
