The objective of this study was to determine whether the prevalence of Pneumocystis jirovecii dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) gene mutations has changed since the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) and whether the mutations are associated with poor outcome in Spanish HIV-1–infected patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP). We studied 167 PcP episodes in HIV-1–infected patients diagnosed during the pre-cART (1989–1995) and cART (2001–2004) periods. Molecular genotyping of DHPS was successfully performed in 98 patients (43 pre-cART and 55 cART). Following the occurrence of suspected cases of Vibrio cholerae in Karaj in 2008, this study was conducted in order to determine whether or not the cases were infected with cholera and, if so, to describe the prevalence of serotypes, route of transmission and the antimicrobial resistance profile. In this cross-sectional study, 6505 rectal swabs were collected from patients with acute gastroenteritis. Serotypes and biotypes of the isolates were determined by standard procedures. Colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) places patients at risk for postoperative MRSA wound infections. To determine the effect of a decontamination and prophylaxis protocol on postoperative MRSA wound infections in patients with nasal MRSA. Wound cultures over a 23-month period were reviewed before and 11 months after implementation of a screening and decontamination protocol. After preoperative MRSA screening with nasal swabs, carriers were instructed to use intranasal mupirocin for 5 to 7 days before surgery and 5 to 7 days of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole starting the day before surgery.
