The genus Chromobacterium encompasses free-living Gram-negative bacteria. Until 2007, the genus consisted of only one species but six species are now recognized. Chromobacterium violaceum is the type species of the genus and is commonly found in soil and water in tropical and sub-tropical regions. We have investigated a collection of 111 isolates displaying violet pigmentation from undisturbed aquatic and soil environments from Brazilian Cerrado ecosystem. The 16S rRNA gene phylogeny revealed that …

In this review, the authors discuss the evidence that rational use of antituberculosis drugs can treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis. The following drugs groups are covered:
. Group one- first-line antituberculosis drugs: isoniazid, rifampicin and others rifamycins, pyrazinamide, ethambutol.
. Group two- fluoroquinolones: Ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, and moxifloxacin.
. Group three- injectable antituberculosis drugs: aminoglycosides (streptomycin, kanamycin, and amikacin) and the polypeptides (capreomycin and viomycin)
. Group four- second-line antituberculosis drugs: thioamides (ethionamide and protionamide), cycloser…

According to the results of this small randomised controlled trial (RCT), prophylaxis with Ciprofloxacin and inhaled colistin does not reduce the risk of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P aeruginosa) infection in children with cystic fibrosis (CF).
The authors note that children with CF are at a high risk of acquiring pulmonary infections with P aeruginosa – this is hard to eradicate once established in the airways and is associated with irreversible pulmonary damage. Prophylactic treatment appeared to have a beneficial effect in previous retrospective studies; the purpose of …

Conclusions: Fifty percent of Staphylococcal spp. were ER among which 23.48% were iMLS B phenotypes. Eighty-seven per cent of iMLS B phenotypes were observed to be methicillin-resistant. The high frequency of methicillin resistance isolates (87.12%) with in vitro inducible clindamycin resistance at our institute raises concern of clindamycin treatment failures with methicillin-resistant infections. So we recommend that microbiology laboratories should include the D-test for inducible resistance to clindamycin in the routine antibiotic susceptibility testing. Abstract The causes of pouch dysfunction are inflammatory, non-inflammatory and iatrogenic. The most common long-term complication
is pouchitis. Diagnosis should be based on clinical symptoms, endoscopic appearance and histologic findings. Ciprofloxacin
and metronidazole are the treatment of choice for pouchitis. Fistulae and perianal abscesses should be suspected to be an
expression of misdiagnosed Crohn’s disease. Strictures are confronted by endoscopic balloon dilatation. Patients who will
be refractory to all forms of medical treatment should have surgical treatment such as faecal diversion or pouch revision.

Abstract: A 5-year survey from 2005 to 2009 revealed an increasing trend of resistance to nalidixic acid (from 0% in 2005 to 11% in 2009) among 858 clinical isolates of Salmonella Typhimurium. In addition, 10 ceftriaxone-resistant and 3 Ciprofloxacin-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium isolates were detected over the period of study. (Source: Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease)
