Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) is the second most common nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in South Korea. Nevertheless, the diagnosis and treatment of M. abscessus lung disease can be problematic. Surgical resection has been tried for patients with localized M. abscessus lung disease refractory to medical treatment. Here, we report on a 25-year-old woman with M. abscessus lung disease who had been diagnosed and treated three times for pulmonary tuberculosis. She was initially diagnosed …

Conclusion: One week of furazolidone in combination with 2 weeks of amoxicillin, omeprazole, and bismuth subcitrate is a safe and cost-effective regimen for the eradication of H pylori. Adding metronidazole to the above regimen does not increase the eradication rate. (Source: The Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology)

SPCs have been updated to include new recommendations for patients on concomitant verapamil or Clarithromycin, based on drug-drug interactsion studies in healthy adults.
Plasma concentrations of dabigatran might be elevated when co-administered with strong P-glycoprotein inhibitors eg verapamil, amiodarone.
Dosing should be reduced to 150mg daily in patients receiving concomitant verapamil. If patients are also renally impaired, a reduction to 75mg should be considered.
For patients on concomitant dabigatran and Clarithromycin the SPC recommends close monitoring for signs of bleeding, without …

The in vitro activities of CEM-101, telithromycin, azithromycin, Clarithromycin, and doxycycline were tested against 10 isolates each of Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia (Chlamydophila) pneumoniae. The MIC at which 90% of the isolates of both C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae were inhibited and the minimal bactericidal concentration at which 90% of the isolates were killed by CEM-101 were 0.25 mug/ml (range 0.125-0.5 mug/ml for C. trachomatis and 0.25-1.0 mug/ml for C. pneumoniae).

Abstract Adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD) is a rare rheumatological condition characterized by an acute systemic involvement. There
are no treatment guidelines. Glucocorticoids (GC), methotrexate (MTX), cyclosporin A and biologic agents have been successfully
used, often in association. We treated six cases of AOSD with Clarithromycin (CM) in combination with low-mild dose of GC
and MTX. Four of them were not responsive to high-dose GC added to DMARDs, while two of them were treated with low-mild dose
of GC added to CM from the beginning. CM, 500 mg b.i.d., was added to a …

Abstract We evaluated the β-lactamase-producing ability and resistance to 20 antibacterial agents of 448 clinically isolated strains
of Haemophilus influenzae accumulated from October 2000 to July 2001 (phase 1) and of 376 different strains accumulated from January to June 2004 (phase
2), from institutions that participated in a nationwide Drug-Resistant Pathogen Surveillance Group in Pediatric Infectious
Disease. Between phase 1 and phase 2 the proportion of β-lactamase-negative ampicillin (ABPC)-susceptible (BLNAS) strains
declined from 62.9% to 34.3%; the proportions of β-lactamase-positive ABPC-resistant (BLPAR) strains were 8.3% and 6.4% in
phases 1 and …

Conclusions
The impact of associations among macrolide consumption, influenza and socioeconomic factors may reflect inappropriate use of these agents to treat viral infections and/or prescribing for secondary infections, and knowledge of the virus versus bacteria problem and accessibility of healthcare. Further research surrounding differences in access to antimicrobial prescriptions and treatment options between advantaged and disadvantaged populations is suggested to further understand the dynamics of antimicrobial use in Canada. Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the complex interaction of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) and
individual classes of antimicrobial agents on the nasopharyngeal carriage of erythromycin-resistant pneumococci within the
day-care center population. Between February 2005 and May 2007, nasopharyngeal cultures for Streptococcus pneumoniae were obtained from 1,829 day-care center attendees in Central Greece. Thirty-one percent of the pneumococci were erythromycin-resistant;
85.2% of these isolates were also penicillin-nonsusceptible. PCV7 immunization was associated with decreased carriage of erythromycin-resistant
PCV7 serotypes but not with an overall decrease in erythromycin-resistant …

Clarithromycin is a 14-member lactone ring macrolide with potent activity against Haemophilus influenzae, including ampicillin-resistant strains. We evaluated the in vivo efficacy of Clarithromycin at 40 mg/day and 100 mg/day for 3 days in the treatment of a murine model of pneumonia using a macrolide-resistant H. influenzae strain, which was also ampicillin resistant. The MIC of clarithromicin was 64 mug/ml. The viable bacterial counts …
